Friends,
We hope you will join us next Wednesday when ICNY, Freedom Agenda, and partners from the the Campaign to Close Rikers rally to forcefully remind the Adams administration that the safest communities are the ones with the most resources, not the most law enforcement.
We will call for Care Not Criminalization on January 24 from 11:30am to 1pm at Hostos Community College, as Mayor Adams delivers his State of the City speech.
This is how Freedom Agenda explains what is at stake:
Mayor Adams is slashing funding for critical services, but found the resources to offer historic raises for police and jail guards, flood the subways with police, and expand juvenile detention.
The Mayor’s alarming expansion of criminalization has included a revival of racially-biased stop-and-frisk practices and a huge expansion of low-level arrests. When coupled with cuts to preventative programs and failure to deliver on others, these practices are fueling a soaring youth detention rate, and a rising jail population - including a growing proportion of people diagnosed with a serious mental illness.
This is an opportunity for faith leaders and communities to insist that the Adams administration demonstrate the compassion and moral courage New Yorkers deserve. You can register to attend the rally here.
